“Witnessing”

             By M.D. Briscoe

Loneliness

Madness

A world that would sooner lock me up than listen

Tragedy

Sadness

That aren’t my own, yet through them are transmitted

Torture

Violence

Pleading eyes that stare back at me

Crying

Silence

I can’t tell what’s worse, ignorance or apathy

“Conversing with Carnists”

             By M.D. Briscoe

Turn away

Find God

You’re gay

Eating meat is the American way

Masculine men

Eat beef

And chicken

Haven’t you heard that it's finger lickin’?

Protein needs

I can’t just

Eat beans

It doesn’t matter, they're only machines

What about cheese

Oh my God

Think of cheese

If there’s no cheese no thank you, please

Plants feel too

Heard it once

So it’s true

You’re no better than me, but I'm better than you

What would we do

With the cows

And their chutes

We’ve bred them for this, now we can’t let them loose

They’re ours to kill

Relax

Take pills

Do you really want to die on this hill?

. . .

“What Do You Eat?”

             By M.D. Briscoe

I eat every food

But animals are alive

I like them that way
