Poetry by Colin Ian Jeffery
By Colin Ian Jeffery
Horses race across the prairie, grey stallion leading
Mares with foals, young stallions, tails swept back
Chasing the wind, hooves sounding like thunder.
Prey animals of flight fleeing danger wild-eyed
Seeking somewhere safe from predators
Where they rest and graze, ready for flight again.
Entering a valley, gathering, panting, sweating,
After running miles panicked at full gallop.
Grey stallion trots to the top of nearby hill
Overlooking valley and weary resting herd.
Rising on hind legs gives shrilling neigh
Letting herd know he is keeping watch
Protecting them from danger while they relax
Mares, foals, young stallions, in midday heat.
- Colin Ian Jeffery is an established English poet and novelist with world-wide
reputation; his books can be purchased from Amazon and all good bookshops. He
was seven, a choirboy, when he became entranced by poetry after hearing the
twenty-third psalm. The beauty of the words struck his soul like lightning and
his Muse began to sing. He then found poetry was being read on the BBC radio
Home Service and would listen in awe and delight to such poets as Dylan Thomas,
John Betjeman, and Ted Hughes.
